AEA N28 Stereo Ribbon Mic: The Nuvo Series’ Compact Newcomer

The AEA N28 Nuvo Series stereo ribbon microphone is our latest step in providing the finest, most pristine, and natural-sounding audio products. The all-new design is an evolution of our work with stereo ribbon designs, not a replacement for the R88 (or active R88A). Instead, it complements it with modern mid-field applications in mind. If you love the R88’s natural depth and stereo imaging but want something a bit more compact and adaptable, the N28 is the answer.

Blumlein Stereo in a Compact Form

Like the R88, one of the N28’s defining features is its Blumlein stereo configuration. It houses two matched, figure-8 ribbon transducers positioned 90 degrees to each other that reproduce an immersive stereo image. With this single microphone, you get the entire stereo field of your soundstage with incredible accuracy. It streamlines the signal chain and setup, removes additional phasing considerations, and simplifies the entire process.

Optimized for Mid-Field Recording

The N28 shines in mid-field recording applications, retaining the detail of a near-field mic while blending just the right amount of natural ambiance.

Proximity Effect and Mid-Field Ribbon Mics

Proximity effect is the accentuation of low frequencies when a ribbon mic is close to a sound source. Near-field ribbon mics like the N22 minimize this effect, making them ideal for getting right up on a source like a guitar speaker or vocalist. In contrast, far-field ribbons like the R88 are typically farther away from the source negating the issue.

The N28 falls between these two categories. It still offers the classic low-end warmth associated with ribbons but with a more controlled proximity effect. Ideal for capturing sources at distances ranging from 8 inches to 3 feet, it is particularly useful for drum overheads and acoustic instruments; anywhere you want a natural, balanced sound while preserving the space’s sonic personality.

The Perfect Addition to the AEA Nuvo Series

The AEA Nuvo series emphasizes versatility and addresses the needs of modern recording. The N28 complements the N8, N22, and N13 and their unique roles by adding stereo recording to the line.

N8: Excels at capturing expansive room sound with maximum openness.

N22: Optimized for close-miking instruments with minimal proximity effect.

N13: A mid-field single-channel ribbon mic with a clear top-end that excels at capturing fast transients.

N28: A compact, mid-field stereo option that brings Blumlein stereo recording to the Nuvo line.

Active Electronics for Maximum Flexibility

Passive ribbon microphones often require specialized microphone preamps for optimal signal quality. While they can sound exceptional when paired correctly, not everyone has the ideal mic/preamp combination. The N28’s active design (like the other Nuvo Series mics) addresses this with a custom Lehle transformer and new dual bufferamp topology.

Running on standard 48V phantom power, it provides clean, honest gain through almost any preamp.

Key Features of the AEA N28

Compact Stereo Design: Easier positioning in any recording environment.

Blumlein Configuration: Captures immersive, phase-coherent stereo sound for an in-the-room audio experience.

Mid-Forward Frequency Response: Provides added clarity while maintaining warmth.

Active Electronics: Ensures proper performance across a much wider range of mic preamps.

Mid-Field Design: A flexible design that captures sound sources from 8 inches to 3 feet away while controlling proximity effect.

N28 vs. R88: Which One is Right for You?

While the R88 mics remain AEA’s flagship far-field stereo ribbon microphone, the mid-field N28 is a distinct yet complementary tool for stereo recording. Both microphones provide Blumlein stereo imaging, but their designs suit different needs:

Choose the N28 if:
  • You need a compact, more maneuverable stereo ribbon microphone.
  • You need a mid-field stereo mic that balances direct sound and room ambiance.
Choose the R88 or R88A if:
  • You need a mic better suited for far-field recording to capture more of your space’s characteristics.

Real-World Testimonials

The N28 is already making an impression on top engineers and producers:

“I used it on an ethnic flute as a close stereo mic. On percussion overheads, it was transient-y and warm. It’s a beautiful mic with amazing imaging.” – Alan Meyerson, Scoring Engineer (Dune, Dunkirk, The Dark Knight)

“The N28 was perfect for an acoustic guitar that sounded scratchy on other mics. It smoothed out the tone without needing EQ.” – Jim McMillen, Producer (Vitamin String Quartet)

“I absolutely love it. It sounds incredible. It’s the mic I have been waiting/asking for years. It’s a game-changer! … I need to buy another one.” – Sean Quackenbush, FOH Engineer (Brandi Carlile)
